Are You Aware About Different Log Transports Used in The Forest?
Different types of trucks and trailers are used in forests for transporting logs. It is chosen based on the size of the logs that is to be transported in such trucks. The condition of the available road in the forest and the regional preferences are also considered.
Tree Length Log Trucks
There are fixed length log trailers or stinger-steer log trailers available as a remorque à bois which is trailer for transporting full-length logs. For minimizing the truck’s overall tare weight, pole trailers were designed. Its limitation is within the length of tree material. The stems are not maintained in the middle and it is between the bolsters at any of the end.
Trailers are designed with multiple sets of double-axle wheels. The stem separates the truck and the loading area, which allows for easy manoeuvring while the truck turns. Sometimes the stem will need further elongation for getting the total control, which is why it is designed with the telescopic technology. A small variation of this pole trailer is known as stinger-steer trailer, which is particularly designed for making a turn on roads which has got very tight turning radii.
The stinger-steered log trailers are consisting of a tractor where a log bunk is mounted over the 5th wheel. This log bunk can easily rotate on the 5th wheel. Another set of bunks is also mounted on the axles which is capable to rotate. The tractor also has got a bar that extends from the back, which is called a reach. A stinger is a steel bar at the rear bunks, which consists of a telescoping bar in order to maintain the distance between the trailer and tractor.
Fixed length log trailers are nothing but a semi-trailer having bunks in place of a box. There is no floor, but only beams for supporting the bunks along the trailer length. They can carry tree length logs or log length material of multiple bunks. In order to transport on public roads, straps or chains are used for securing the logs in the bunks from sliding.
Log Length Log Trucks
Where you have to transport only log length material, any straight truck with a trailer can be used. For self-loading, the straight truck has got a loader that is mounted on the back of the truck.
To achieve the full log truck capacity, indexing logs on a log truck can be used. Usually, by placing the logs top to butt this is achieved and is effective for logs that have high taper.
